Wildlife Photography Ethics

National Geographic published an article last week about the ethics of wildlife photography and filming that is worth the read. Don't Feed The Bears: Ethics in Wildlife and Photography and Filmmaking can be found at http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2014/01/140116-wildlife-photography-film-ethics-manipulation-feeding-staging-science/

When viewing pristine images of nature and the animals that reside there such as the one below, as a photographer it never occurred to me to manipulate animals in order to get the shot that I wanted. Granted I have not had experience with many wild animals other than moose but I simply waited for them to move into different positions or moved myself. The article dives into the fines associated with "cheating" to get that perfect shot and gives recent examples of awards stripped from winners, fines given, and credibility lost. Give it a read. What are your thoughts?

The Rain Room Makes List of 52 Breathtaking Photos

Huffington Post has released their list of the 52 Most Breathtaking Photos from Around the World This Year. Many of the photos show world events, and war torn countries. Many are powerful images of humanity. Some are of simple events like the one pictured below. The 'Rain Room' exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan creates a field of falling water that stops in the area where patrons are walking through allowing them to remain dry in the midst of a rain storm.

Amazing idea for an exhibit, makes for a breathtaking shot indeed, and makes people such as myself really want to visit. Should you have a moment to view the other 51 images I suggest you do so. Definitely a must read for the start of the new year! http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/12/23/photos-of-the-year_n_4493077.html?utm_hp_ref=photography

Whether you are a professional photographer who photographs children or a Mom, Grandmother, or friend of someone with children this is an excellent book for beginners and more advanced shooters on everything you need to know from lighting to posing a little one in their first year. She offers so many ideas for each month of a babies life and the memorable shots that you will want to capture. She also gives you her camera settings for each shot taken so you can duplicate what she has done or find a place to start from.

This is a must own for me and I have read it dozens of times and use it as a reference quite often. It is an easy read and will not be over your head. She also has a book for children age 1 to 10 that I have not read yet but have at the top of my reading list. You can find the book online at http://www.amazon.com or any bookstore. You can also learn more at her website at http://www.merakoh.com. Happy reading.
